SOCKS OFF! Our Project Launch

Wednesday 3rd March 2021 – members of the Rotary club constructed a 1000 metre washing line to test their design and refine their pegging process in preparation for their attempt to break the existing world record of the Longest Washing Line of Socks 6,066 metres and 69,152 socks. This will be the club’s 2021 signature fundraising project.

Lewis Land Group’s Head of Development Michael Long presents a $15,000 cheque to Club President Heather Mayne and Project Manager Trevor Gilson. Lewis Land Group’s Sovereign Place Town Centre is the Principal Sponsor of Rotary’s World Record Attempt which will take place on Friday and Saturday  4th and 5th of June 2021 …  to build a washing line 10,000 metres long with over 100,000 socks pegged to it … and raise over $100,000 for the four local charities.

How to get involved

COLLECT YOUR SOCKS

Collecting all types of Socks, socks and more socks!

All sizes. Singles or pairs. New or used. No stockings, no mittens.

Is that all? No, no, no! Money too – those four local charities have had a very difficult 2020. Fundraising plans had to be shelved so their income dropped and morale suffered. We need to help them recover and get on with their work. That’s why we’ve called the centre bin of the three-bin set-up the “Let’s Help Them” Bin.

The “Lucky Draw”

Each dollar you donate into the “Let’s Help Them Bin” gets you one entry into the Lucky Draw – $1,000 first prize and 10 minor prizes of $50 gift vouchers, thank you Hastings Co-op.

Try your hand at “Guessing the Number of Socks”

Each $5.00 you donate gets you one guess at the total number of socks that will be pegged on our washing line at our World Record Attempt in June 2021 – $1,000 if you alone guess the correct number of socks, shared if there’s more than one correct guess. If the correct number is not guessed, $200 to the closest guess (shared if more than one closest guess).

How does it work? Each “Let’s Help Them” Bin is equipped with a notebook and pen. Write your name and phone number on a page of the notebook and, if you’re donating $5.00 or more, write down your guess at the number of socks (one guess per $5.00), slip the page into the toe of a sock and pop it into the bin. If you’re sockless, you can write your details on an envelope, put your donation inside the envelope, seal it and pop it into the bin. If you just want to donate some money, simple … just pop it into the centre bin.

Any hints re the number of socks? Sure! The current world record is 69,152. Our target is at least 100,000. Activated Eco is loaning us up to 150,000 pegs. How many do you think we will peg out?
